Three days back, we celebrated our daughter Pahal’s first birthday in a quiet, subtle and fresh way. The birthday theme – handmade- made it different and memorable.
In our endeavour to not burden our guests with an obligation of bringing gifts to the party, we asked them not to get anything as gift and if they really had to bring something then it should be hand made! Also, as guests we invited the kids of the helpers we have who help us out in our daily household and office chores.
To begin with, I made a hand made greeting card for her and a few other hand crafted, small gifts made from waste materials. I borrowed the ideas from familyfun.go.com and Google. Around 10 kids were invited and the party was a thorough success in its own meaningful way. Pahal received several beautiful things like a yarn doll, a cloth mat, yarn frog, pom pom, a wooden basket and a cane pen box.
I am sure she would love these gifts when she grows up and understands the meaning of feelings and efforts that go in making something for someone with your own hands and ideas.
As a personal rule, I always prefer giving and receiving hand made, personalized gifts. The reasons may be:
1) Efforts and Time – Many would agree with me that making something for somebody requires lot of effort, brainstorming and above all, time. And just to save these, we usually buy ready made things from market. I love personalized gifts because in this case I respect the other person’s time and efforts. And I expect the same from the receiver when I give hand made gift to someone. It’s easy to spend money in the market than to actually sit down and craft a thing. And simply for this reason such gifts become special gifts.
2) Thoughts and True Feelings – When a person spends few minutes in even thinking about what to make or how to make for you, s/he spends time in thinking about you, your likes – dislikes, taste, personality, ambition and much more. Thus such a gift would, to a great extent, reflect his/her true feelings or opinions about you. Like I remember one of the best gifts I have ever received is a notepad and a pen from a friend in college who wanted me to pursue writing.
3) Uniqueness – Unlike ready made things that are available in legions in the market, a self made gift is always unique.
After all, gifts are not bought. They are made.
