Beauty Lies in Simplicity

April 3, 2018 by Surabhi 5 Comments

“Beauty of style and harmony and grace and good rhythm depends on simplicity” ~ Plato

Beauty is simple. It is subtle and seamless. It is tender and kind.

Simplicity is the basis of beauty. Anything that is simple yet exquisite catches the attention and makes us exclaim ‘wow!’

If we take examples from our everyday life, we realize that even when it comes to emotions, simple words work like magic over exaggerated and elaborated essays. Ever wondered why no phrase or sentence can replace a genuine sorry, a heartfelt thank you or a plain ‘I love you’ that can be expressed in hundreds of ways but still most of us want to hear it in the simplest ways possible.

A clutter-free, symmetrically organized house is more beautiful than a house that is stuffed with ostentatious items. A well written, concise, easy to understand essay in simple language easily wins over the one that is verbose and laden with high vocabulary, redundant phrases. A simple, pretty face looks more adorable than the one with layers of colours and makeup.

Not just this, even if we talk about science and technology, we will realize that the world runs after simple data. Your boss wants you to bring the summarised data that is simple and easy enough to comprehend. This is why companies hire data analysts.
beauty lies in simplicity

When ISRO launched Mission To Mars, the world went in awe because it was simplistic and didn’t cost as much as the satellites launched by developed nations.

If you are a programmer, you very well understand the importance of the short and simple program. Everyone wants a simple code! Why? Because beauty lies in simplicity.

Everywhere we look around, we find that beauty is simple, sleek and structured.

A baby’s face is the prettiest thing. Raindrops feel heavenly. Sunrise and sunset, with their array of colours splashed across the sky, look magical.

Similarly, a person with a simple heart and mind is so much easier to deal with. When you are with a simple person, it is the simplicity that brings the joy and beauty in the relationship. You know your partner is simple so you can be sure of his thoughts. You know he wouldn’t contrive things up in his head or talk with dual motives. Because he is simple in thoughts (and/or in living), you don’t have to worry about finding out the clues to his emotions. Most likely he will mean what he says or expresses.

The thing that attracts me the most to my husband is his simplicity. Probably for many like me, simplicity is an essential quality. It is a quality that one inherits from within and people who normally focus on the superficial things, they may always question the reason and the very meaning of being simple.

While writing this post today because I remember around 12 years back, one of my college seniors said to me, ‘Surabhi, I have a compliment for you. You are very simple.’ and believe it or not, I was offended. I, then, thought being simple was being a bumpkin. And it was definitely not a compliment to me. When I expressed my displeasure to him, he understood it well, smiled at me and remarked, ‘you will appreciate the beauty of simplicity one day. That day you will realize that being simple is actually a compliment.’

Oh! And how I know today what it takes to be a person of simplicity in this world of ostentation and complexities. I am happy to be simple and try to keep everything around me simple too. I am no more in the ‘brand game’, I live in a place where I can better appreciate and enjoy the natural gifts and I revel in the simplicity of life here. Nature is simple and it is the most beautiful thing around.

Thank you Tushar sir. Now I know and have properly understood that ‘simplicity is the ultimate sophistication‘.
