The biggest worry that comes along with pregnancy news is that of stretch marks. While the science says there is no cure or prevention of stretch marks, I have made a cream that does help in lightening the stretch marks. Before I move on and tell you how to make this DIY anti-stretch marks belly butter, let’s first find out what these stretch marks are and what causes them. Whenever our skin expands beyond its natural elasticity, stretch marks occur as a result of breaking of elasticity fibers just below the skin. According to WebMD, ‘Stretch marks happen when your body grows faster than your skin can keep up with. This causes the elastic fibers just under the surface of the skin to break, resulting in stretch marks.’
During pregnancy our weight gain increases suddenly and that causes the skin to expand. Many women are blessed with elastic skin. In their case, little weight gain here and there happens without leaving any stretch marks behind but in most of the cases, sudden weight gain or sudden weight loss is often associated with stretch marks. Our bellies (and breasts) are most susceptible to stretch marks as these two areas are the one that increase the most in size.
I also got rigid stretch marks during my first pregnancy. They are mostly on my belly (below the belly button), and on the sides of my upper thighs. Post pregnancy I tried several oils and balms and cosmetic creams claiming fading of stretch marks but none of them really worked.
This time i.e. during my second pregnancy, I made an anti-stretch marks belly butter that I have been diligently using for over two months now and I am already quite pleased with it. As it is winter season, unlike what I had during the first time, I need to use a moisturizing lotion to keep the skin hydrated and I have chosen this belly butter to use.
The biggest potent ingredient in this anti stretch marks belly butter is raw, unprocessed coconut oil.
Coconut oil is great for diminishing scars and fading skin marks and scars. I remember I once got a big burn mark on my hand while growing up. The doctor suggested using coconut oil on the mark twice a day. My mom massaged my hand twice a day with coconut day and after many months the scar began to fade. My unshakable faith in coconut oil dates back to those days when my ugly scar diminished with regular use of coconut oil.
So this time also I decided to use coconut oil. Not just as a moisturizer but also as an anti stretch mark lotion.
How Coconut Oil Works Well As Anti-Stretch Mark Oil
The biggest strength of coconut oil is its ability to penetrate deep inside the skin. Also, it is a great moisturizing agent loaded with anti oxidants. Thus, massaging the skin with coconut oil helps in improving the skin elasticity and this in turns helps in preventing stretch marks as it makes the skin more elastic and when our skin expands, the skin fibers are able to tolerate the expansion a tad bit more. In case of stretch marks already present, the coconut oil helps in improving the overall health of the skin and helps in producing collagen that renews the skin cells thus fading the old scars.
What Else Works As Anti-Stretch Marks Agent
Vitamin E Oil works great. Vit. E neutralizes free radicals that otherwise damage the skin. Not only it contains lot of anti oxidants, it is an effective anti-aging oil. Plus, it acts as a preservative.
Apart from Vit. E, other moisturizing agents like shea butter, cocoa butter and avocado oil can also be used as all these three are good moisturizers and contain lot of anti oxidants. A combination of all these will make an effective anti stretch marks butter.
How To Make DIY Anti-Stretch Marks Belly Butter
Like I said above, to make an effective anti stretch marks belly butter we need strong moisturizing agents and good anti-oxidants that help in renewing skin cells. So, here we have a belly butter that contains just that.
1 cup raw coconut oil (in solidified form)
3-5 Vit. E capsules
10-15 drops of avocado essential oil
- Take 1 cup og raw coconut oil in solidified form (liquid oil won’t get whipped)
- Add Vit. E oil to the solid coconut oil (you can squeeze some vit.e capsules)

Does DIY Anti-Stretch Marks Belly Butter Really Work?
YES. It does. In my case it does. I have been using it for over 2 months now. There hasn’t been a day when I haven’t used it. I don’t use it twice a day but I use it everyday generously right after coming out of shower.
I do not know if it will prevent new stretch marks because I am yet to have a delivery and I will notice the new stretch marks only after delivery but yes it has helped in fading the existing ones.
I apply the belly butter on my belly and buttocks and the marks have reduced. They have definitely become lighter. I don’t think they will disappear completely but even if they don’t, its okay. At least this belly butter lightens them and this shows that it surely works.
