Yesterday while I watched Oscar award ceremony on television, two things took my notice. One was Sandra Bullock’s wacky facial expression when she tried to open the envelope and the other was Ben Affleck’s award acceptance speech.
I am a huge fan of Sandra Bullock and last evening she taught me a lesson – be yourself. Even if you are surrounded by cameras. Be your crazy, wacky self, always.

Ben Affleck taught me the best lesson.
I really loved what Ben said in his speech. He said, while thanking his wife, ‘thank you for working on our marriage for 10 christmases. It is work, but it is the best kind of work and there’s no one I’d rather work with’.
These three lines touched me. Ben is so very right about the ‘work’ of marriage. We all know that just like everything else, marriage is also a work. Just that, like Ben said, it is the best kind of work as it gives you the ultimate joy of love.

I love Ben Affleck as an actor. I remember him from his movie ‘Chasing Amy’. I hold tremendous respect for him and his work and then this speech left me in awe of him.
Ben is married to Jennifer Garner for seven years and they have known each other for more than eight years. Through his speech, Ben clearly expressed his gratitude towards his wife and thanked her for making efforts to make the marriage work.

As I read in newspapers, some are speculating over whether the marriage was on rocks anytime, but I find that silly. Just because you thank your spouse for ‘being there and helping you’ does not mean you were in trouble.

Marriage, according to me, is like any other relationship. Two people have to live together, work together to shape it to whatever they want it to be. More than anything else, what matters the most about a marriage or any other relationship is the outcome. You are happy in your marriage, this means your marriage is successful and that your spouse deserves a mention and a thank you.
So when Ben thanked his wife, my immediate thought was ‘wow! thats actually so great of him to dedicate his speech to his marriage on the world’s most honored stage!’ When the camera moved to Jennifer, we could see she was touched too. It is evident that the two really work on their marriage. Something, every married couple should learn from them.
It is important to acknowledge that your marriage requires efforts and it is even more important to thank your spouse for putting in the required efforts.
